Now that I have graduated high school and I am moving on to get a college degree, it seems like all of the questions that people ask me are about the same thing. Everyone wants to know what kind of degree I will be pursuing. People ask me questions about how long it will take and about the amount and difficulty of classes I will have to take to get that degree. Although I am happy that these people are interested in learning more about me, I feel like they are asking all of the wrong questions. Instead of asking about my degree they should ask me about how I will use that degree and what it will mean to my future.
As of right now, I have the intention of earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. This degree is a great degree to have because it offers me options, which are important to me because I cannot make up my mind as to what career I would like to pursue. With a degree in chemistry I can work in basically any type of lab, teach chemistry at the primary or secondary levels, or continue on to an advanced degree program such as medical or pharmacy school. So, after college, I will take a bit of time to figure out exactly what it is I want to do with my degree. I will focus on volunteering at hospitals and pharmacies or maybe even work in a lab to gain experience. I will use the internet to research the different career paths that I will be qualified for. By working in these places and researching online, I can get a taste of each atmosphere and maybe then I will be able to decide. I will not rush into a career just because I think it’s the right thing to do because this time after college is one of the most important times in life. During this time it is okay to explore and try new things and even make mistakes because once you put the time and effort into a career path, it will be very hard to go back and choose to pursue something different, as the adult life becomes more difficult and busy. Also, I don’t want to become very involved in a career if I will end up hating it after so many years. Since I have no idea what career is best for me, I will use that time after college to test the waters of different careers and choose accordingly.
The internet will play a very important role in my journey. Not only will I use it casually but I will use it to help me with my career choice. Since the internet is so full of knowledge and is bursting with new information each day, I will be able to use it to research different careers, as I said earlier. I will join sites that can help me search and bring up facts and testimonies about each prospective career and I will use that information to help me decide. Once I have decided on a career, I will use the internet to make me more accessible to co-workers, patients, or students. As a bench worker in a lab I will use the internet to share my findings with co-workers and the companies I will work for in order to make sure that everyone has the same knowledge and will be able to work as a team towards the same goal. As a doctor or pharmacist I will use online forms and files that can be easily shared with other doctors in order to make sure that the patient is given exactly what attention or medicine he needs to live a healthy life. The forms and files can be kept more accurately when they are shared with each doctor the patient sees and each pharmacy the patient uses, as they all will be able to enter new information into the patient’s file. As a teacher I will use online courses and materials to help my students even when we are not in the classroom. Students will be able to access homework and lectures and watch videos that I post on a safe site to get help with difficult subjects while they are at home. In any career, I will use email to keep in touch with those that I work with or for. No matter what career I will choose, the internet will be a big part of my life.
The time after college is very important to any blossoming young adult and I intend to use it carefully. During that time I will carefully decide which career I would like to pursue only after researching online and gaining experience in different areas. While working at my career I will make myself available to those around me by using email, posting information on safe sites, using online forms and files, and sharing my knowledge of new things. The internet is and will always be a big part of my life and I intend on using it to become a successful adult in the workplace, whatever workplace that may be.
